Sustainable Leather

Craftsmanship and Quality with A Conscience

At Parker Clay, weā€™re intensely proud of our products and our mission. Parker Clay offers the finest sustainable leather goods in a variety of both contemporary and traditional styles.Ā

We wanted to answer some of your questions about sustainable leather and what goes into making our products, how we source it, how we use it, and how we support our artisans who create our wonderful goods.

Sustainable leather is more than just leather crafted with the environment in mind. Every aspect of the production process ā€” from sourcing to when it lands in your hands ā€” is curated with quality craftsmanship and the highest ethical standards.

Itā€™s ethical, sustainable leather you can be proud of too.

What is sustainable leather?

Sustainable leather is leather that is a byproduct of local farming and agriculture industries. It is considered sustainable because the animals are not raised for the express purpose of using their leather for goods ā€” they are first and foremost farm animals.

We source our leather from local Ethiopian providers who treat their animals with care and respect. We also offer prime fair-trade prices to local farmers. Since we use ethically sourced leather from food animals, our sourcing has a negligible environmental impact on local agriculture and processes. And because our products are hand-made, our industrial processes are likewise low impact and sustainable.

Another term for our sustainable leather is ā€œethical leatherā€ ā€” ethics form the backbone of our business and have led to Parker Clayā€™s success.

How is sustainable leather made?

Throughout the entire manufacturing process and production process ā€” including sourcing raw materials, tanning, sewing leather together, and sending finished products to customers ā€” Sustainable leather is made with the planet and people in mind.

Sustainable Leather Production & Sourcing

In sustainable leather sourcing, animals are not raised solely for the purpose of leather production. Rather, the leather is a byproduct of local farming. Sourcing leather from animals that are first a local product of the meat industry contributes to a circular economy, helping ensure no part of the animal is wasted.

Plus, local farming ensures animal welfare and cruelty-free practices ā€” unlike many other farms where animals are treated poorly and raised solely for leather manufacturers.

By hand-selecting sustainable leather from local Ethiopian farmers who are paid a fair price and run safe, clean facilities, Parker Clay is able to ensure premium quality and durability in each product.

Sustainable Leather Tanning

Tanneries that donā€™t treat leather with the planet (and people) in mind can cause serious harm. Companies may use trivalent chromium, formaldehyde, alum, and other artificial chemicals. These can let off harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) ā€” which are toxic and can cause anything from minor irritation to mutations and cancers.

This is not just harmful to those who wear the leather products ā€” itā€™s also harmful to the workers who are tanning the leathers. Plus, these chemicals and compounds are toxic to the environment.

However, sustainable leather is treated with recycled water and without harmful artificial chemicals. Plus, itā€™s done by hand ā€” further lessening the environmental footprint.

This lessens the overall impact of the leather industry and each product.

The Environmental Impact of the Leather Industry

The global impact of leather production is huge. Some of the biggest concerns of real leather production include:

Land and water use
Deforestation
Greenhouse gas emissions
Traceability

Thatā€™s why we use traditional, local sourcing and handcrafting practices that reduce the impact of chrome and other chemicals that are found in our competitorsā€™ products. We also use recycled water to minimize wastewater and environmental impacts. And, we demand our partnersā€™ adherence to environmentally sustainable processes in their tanning and preparation of the leather we source.

What is ā€œeco leatherā€?

ā€œEco leatherā€ or ā€œeco-friendly leatherā€ is a trade term to describe leather that is sourced in various ecologically or animal-friendly ways. This includes the creation of leather substitutes from plant fibers and other materials, many of which are made with processes that areā€”ironicallyā€”harmful to the environment.

We prefer the term sustainable leather because it more accurately reflects the Parker Clay set of best practices for ecological, cultural, and economic sustainability. Our leather is actual real animal skin, sourced from animals raised locally for food.

We stand behind our ethical leather and its sourcing because, unlike so-called faux ā€œeco leather,ā€ our leather is not derived from plastic, wood fibers, or other non-animal materials that would need to be produced with chemicals and leave behind industrial waste. Some fashion brands may also greenwash and call ā€œeco leatherā€ by names like ā€œpleatherā€ and ā€œvegan leatherā€ ā€” when itā€™s really just plastic.

The local tanning process used for our leather goods recycles water and is non-artificial, done again with traditional local practices.

Is vegan leather better for the planet than real leather?

When searching for sustainable and eco-friendly leather, many people assume that products made from so-called ā€œvegan leatherā€ or ā€œeco leatherā€ are the best.

However, thatā€™s not typically the case.

While there are some plant-based leathers, vegan leather is typically made from two different plastic polymers: polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

As these ā€œfaux leathersā€ ā€” which are essentially made of plastic and treated with other harmful chemicals ā€” break down in landfills, these toxins are released back into the environment. Unlike traditional leather made from cowhide and other animal skin, plastic-based ā€œvegan leathersā€ take years to break down.

While ā€œvegan leatherā€ and ā€œpleatherā€ may seem like sustainable alternatives to real leather, these terms are often just terms thrown around by the fashion industry to mask the fact that theyā€™re cheaply made from plastics. They simply mean the ā€œfaux leatherā€ is not made from animal skin ā€” however, their overall impact is truly far more harmful than traditional animal leathers.

The Longevity of Pleather vs Real Leather

Another pain point of pleather is that because itā€™s often made of cheap plastics, it will typically wear out a lot sooner ā€” you may get a few years of wear out of it, at best.

When taken care of, however, real animal leather products can last far beyond your lifetime. That leather backpack you buy can carry you through a lifetime of road trips and other excursions ā€” and be passed down to your children and your childrenā€™s children. Your handcrafted leather wallet wonā€™t have to be replaced in a few years ā€” and will even get better with age.

Remember: One of the biggest sustainability practices you can adopt is investing in high-quality products that are made to last and keep them in a circular ā€” rather than linear ā€” life cycle.

In short, ā€œvegan leathersā€ that are made from cheap plastic and other toxic chemicals are not genuinely sustainable leather alternatives ā€” and may be more harmful to your body and the planet than real, sustainably crafted animal leather options.

Sustainable Leather That is Ethical Too

Sustainable leather falls short if the people who are producing it are not treated ethically and paid a living wage.

Truly sustainable leather means it fairly supports the people who make the products ā€” and provides them with a sustainable means of life. After all, the impact of leather goes beyond the environment.

Thatā€™s why at Parker Clay, we empower local workers and support them to live a quality life.

The Parker Clay promise to you and the world

Who are our Artisans?

We employ local women from Addis Ababa, many of whom have been impacted by human trafficking and the sex trade. We provide training, pensions, health care, paid time off, access to transportation to and from work, and even a laundry service.

We are immensely proud of the fact that we can provide support to these women and their families. By providing dignified, well-paying positions, we help empower our artisans to send their children to school and provide for their parents in old age. Our artisans are like our family, and we love to set goals and build a better Ethiopia together.

Preserving Native Ethiopian Crafting Traditions

Our Artisans make use of native Ethiopian craft knowledge and techniques. Our goods are designed in California and are handcrafted in Ethiopia. Since our luxury goods are works of art meant to be passed down within families, we use a mix of contemporary design and traditional Ethiopian artistry to create our unique luxury leather goods. As leather ages, it develops a unique patina and shine. This means that your Parker Clay item will only become more beautiful as it gets older.

This canā€™t be said for many other brands of handbags and leather goods. By buying Parker Clay, youā€™re not only supporting a great ethical brand, but youā€™re also gifting yourself with a work of art that will be handed down in your family for generations. Whatā€™s more sustainable ā€” or beautiful ā€” than that?

The Sustainable Supply Chain ā€” The Good Business of Good Ethics

We use two phrases when we educate people about our products: Conscious Consumerism and Fashion on Purpose.

Conscious Consumerism
refers to the idea that consumers should have options to support companies that use their resources to care for the most vulnerable, and that doing so does not compromise on the quality and style of products. Not only is it possible, but as concerns about climate change and environmental issues grow, itā€™s necessary. As the Parker Clay supply chain is designed with fair trade practices in mind, our view is that being an ethical firm is essential to our success.

Fashion on Purpose speaks to the idea that fashion doesnā€™t need to simply be about visual design and style but can also be about the story of how the goods were produced and the good that is done by producing amazing, fashionable products locally, and how this can lift people out of poverty.

Parker Clayā€™s Ethical Leather Promise

So, we at Parker Clay believe that preserving local skills, sourcing our leather locally and sustainably, and providing our artisans with a fair, livable wage and benefits all contribute to the creation of a beautiful, fashionable product that you would be proud to own.
